Supporting experiential learning: An integrated website for Chemical Engineering laboratories
This paper details the development of an integrated website for Chemical Engineering laboratories, at the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Sydney. The website so far includes heat transfer, crystallisation and fluid dynamics laboratory exercises. For each of the exercises the website presents the laboratory instructions, P&IDs and a virtual tour. The virtual tour (inspired by the Carrick Project being led by Ian Cameron and Christine Norton) enables students to familiarise themselves with the laboratory equipment and its functions well before they attend their laboratory session. By rolling their cursor across a photograph of the laboratory, the students activate “pop-ups” which show important equipment in greater detail, together with an explanation of the equipment operating principles and relevant equations.
