Two generic routes exist for production of synthetic transport fuel from feeds including natural gas, coal, and biomass. The FT route produces primarily diesel fuel, and methanol conversion to gasoline is a commercially proven alternative. Both routes are three step processes and have similar thermal efficiencies. A range of factors influence the decision as to which alternative may be favoured in a given location.
